Frequently Asked Questions

What are macros?

A macro or SmartPhrase are small pieces of text/hotkeys you type into your electronic medical record system (EMR) that expand into a larger body of text.

For example, you could set up a macro named .PERC. Whenever you type .PERC (note the period) into your EMR it would expand into:

You were prescribed the prescription pain medication Percocet (acetaminophen/oxycodone). This is a very powerful and addictive narcotic medication. Please take this medication every 6 hours, as directed. Please do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important decisions while on this medication, it can impair your judgment. If you have any questions about this medication please contact your primary care doctor.
Why Macros?

Providers tend to put the same things their notes over and over again. This is very time-consuming. Macros help decrease this by cutting the typing down from large paragraphs to small pieces of text.

Does my EMR support macros?

More than likely yes. Popular EMRs that support macros include:

ALLSCRIPTS / SUNRISE

CERNER

EPIC
